Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary, the most prominent cultural and educational centre in the eastern region. At the university campus, buildings by the library surround courts that lead to the botanical garden.
The Debrecen University Botanical Garden was established in 1928, replacing a smaller botanical collection. The original species match the flora in the local forest. The botanical garden also includes a memorial of Sandor Korosi Csoma. The unique cactus collection represents about two thousand species.
