The town of Eger has a long time span of historical events, with sights drawing many visitors. It is also a major educational and cultural centre in Northern Hungary. At the time when Hungary was divided into three parts, the local fort became an important border station. In 1552, Istvan Dobo and his men defended it against the invading Turkish army. Nevertheless, half-a-century later, the fort and the city came under Turkish rule, and numerous mosques were built, some of which still stand.
The Minaret in Eger is a 40-metre high tower, built of sandstone or grit. It is the northest-laying Turkish monument in Europe. 97 winding stairs lead up to its balcony. It can be visited every day from the beginning of April until the end of October, from 10am until 6pm. ![]() ![]() Eger Minaret - nearest hotels
