Fertod is located in the western part of Hungary, close to the Austrian border, by the Ferto Lake. The castle in Fertod was built by the prominent Esterhazy family in between 1720 and 1766. It is called the Hungarian Versailles, for its extravagance and style. The richly decorated interior and the luxurious furnishings bring back the atmosphere of the Baroque-Rococo style of the dukes palace. The first major festivity was held here in 1770, when the castle was introduced to the wiener aristocracy. Afterwards, the mansion hosted a great number of elegant meetings and banquets.
Joseph Haydn, the famous Austrian composer lived here in the second part of the 18th century. Today, this period is honored by a museum. The castle is a cultural site as well, with magnificent concerts during the summer months. Esterhazy-Castle in Fertod - nearest hotels
