Hortobagy Nine-Hole Bridge |

|
The village of Hortobagy is located in Hajdu-Bihar County, on the great Hungarian Plain, 36 kilometres west of Debrecen. The village has only a few local residents, but its unique tourists sites draw many visitors every year.
The emblem of the national park is the Kilenclyuku Hid, nine-hole bridge in Hortobagy, built in Classicist style to replace an old wooden bridge in the middle of the 19th century. With its 167.3 metres length and over 92 metres width, the bridge was the largest vehicular bridge of the time. The unique ends, which resemble open arms, made it easy for the shepherds to drive the herd onto the bridge. The construction proved to be stable, but damages on the surface called for restoration work in the early 1980s. Around August 20th each year, a Bridge Fair is hold in the area, where numerous traditional arts and crafts shops present their merchandise for all who love folk art.
