The village of Szigliget is located in Veszprem County, close to Tapolca, north of Lake Balaton in western Hungary. Local sights include a church built in the 12th century, the fort and the old village center around the fort, and the Eszterhazy Castle from the 19th century, with its surrounding botanical garden.
The Szigliget Fort was built by the Pannonhalma Abbey in the middle of the 13th century. The fort on the top of a hill withstood the Turkish siege, but the Austrian-Hungarian Emperor ordered its explosion in 1702, so only the ruins remained for visitors to see. Restoration and renovation is under way. The fort ruins can be visited every day from the beginning of March until the end of October. ![]() ![]() Szigliget Fort - nearest hotels
